MOPS Family Shoots

The Beginning of last month I partnered with the MOPS organization from Christ Community Church in Carmichael to help them with their annual fundraiser. My contribution was to donate my sitting fees and to sell my prints at a greatly reduced rate. Over the course of two Saturdays I took a total of 17 family shoots. It was tons of fun; butg exhausting. Almost all of the shots were done with off camera flash diffused through umbrellas. This workes out great for lighting; but when it's windy out, it's a whole another story. The first day of shooting I had ALL of my weights on the light stands trying to hold the lights in place. This proved to be fruitless as both light stands fell over several times. Luckily none of them came down on any of the families. I did lose one umbrella; lucky they're cheap!

Above are some behind the scenes photos from the Engagement Shoot of Alisen and Justin this past weekend in lovely Napa. We were fortunate enough to be able to shoot at Truchard Winery; great Pinot by the way! This was the first time that Mike and I had shot together in a professional environment. It was too much fun. Between 3 cameras we fired almost one thousand frames! Another really cool thing was that we had almost 3 hours to shoot! Alisen and Justin were great throughout the whole shoot. Both were totally relaxed and extremely fun to work with. The above photo is of my 10 day old son asleep on mommy. This was a trick shot as there was not enough light for my autofocus to pic him up. I had to manually focus this shot and shoot from a bean bag on my nightstand. I can't remember exactly; but I think this was a two second long exposure. The light was provided by my laptop screen a few feet away.
One of the hardest things for me to do as a parent is to look into these eyes and tell her "no". This is one of my favorite pictures of Ashley to date as she is showcasing her showstopping feature: her eyes. She even obliged me by throwing in a tear for a little added drama.

The wife is due with our second child on Monday. I took a little time last week to take a few shots of her with Ashley before Ryan comes along. All of these were done with just a couple 580 ex flashes w/ umbrellas. Easy peasy.

Rock Stars

Michelle asked me to help her take some photos for an ad that was part of a school project. So basically the concept was a before/after shoot. The before shots were not all that exciting; but obviously we got to have a little fun with the Rock Star concept. So out came the strobes and away to work we went! I can't tell how much fun it is to actually make a photo rather than just capturing a moment. It is even more fun when the shot turns out just like you visualized. The majority of what I shoot is either event or wildlife photography; where you look for moments and hope to capture them. On this shoot I would tell the subject where I wanted them and how to pose and adjust my flashes and camera accordingly and voila! No rushing, no on camera flash, all manual, all fun! I really would like to do more of this type of work (not necessarily over the top rock star shoots) in the future.

Pool Time

On Sunday July 5th we went over to my sister's house for a barbecue. The weather was perfect. Too perfect in fact: I am still suffering from an awesome sunburn! Aside from the sunburn; we had a blast! Especially Ashley: the more and more we do with Ashley the more fun she is. She spent most of her day in the pool. She has absolutely zero fear of the water. She swam almost as much as I did; which is a lot.

After a long day of meetings I Am trying to get out of he Portland airport and make it home in time to spend at least a half hour with my wife on her Birthday before she goes off to sleep. Who knows; I may even get to say goodnight to Ashley too. The photo below is the Portland Airport moments before the evening rush hit.

Green Wedding

Been away for a while again. Here are a few photos from the Green wedding 0n Saturday, June 20th. Both the wedding and reception were located at the beautiful restaurant called Villa Buscaglias in Jackson. I never would have expected such a place to be located in Jackson. With it's classic Mediterranian design; this restaurant would seem so much more at home in the Napa Valley. But here it was in Jackson.

The weather gods were smiling for the event as well. What had been temperatures in the 100's just a few days prior turned into a perfect 80 degrees. Another pleasantry for this day was the very intimate size of the wedding. I think it totalled 25 including the bride and groom. This was nice for me as I was able to get to know not only the wedding party; but many of the guest.

As a photographer I had a blast. Everyone was extremely pleasant to work with as well as entertaining! The bride's father inparticular. I would like to thank one of the guests, Mark, for buying me a beer after the ceremony. It really hit the spot. I could not have asked for a better day of shooting.

Marc is one of my good buddies. He asked me to take a couple of photos of his family before his wife delivers their next bundle of joy in a couple of weeks. So of course I obliged. We were able to essentially walk out into what is backyard, which is really a parkway right next to his house, and take some photos.

It was the perfect day for photos too: very light overcast to diffuse the sun, and a light breeze. Who could ask for more?

I realized today that I have not updated my blog in a while. I have also been too busy and not taking pictures. I have issued a challenge to myself to update the blog on a semi consistent basis. So from now on I will try to take a photo that is interesting on a daily or everyother day basis and post it here.

Down on the Farm

After a two hour drive down to Sebastopol to Full House Farm; Ashley had not taken her morning nap, and Mom and Dad were a little bit uptight from a two hour chorus of disapproval.

None the less we made it. Ashley was 100% better once she was removed from her car seat. The Farm is nestled in a little valley along the coastal mountains. The weather was perfect: 70 degrees with a light breeze and blue skies. You could not pick a better day.

Christie, the Farm owner, met us when we arrived. We had found out only an hour prior that you need an appointment to come visit. Lucky for us Heather called to get the address. That's when we found out it's just Christie and her small farm. It was nothing like either of us had expected. The farm consisted of 4 horses( 1 Pony and three Arabian), 4 goats, and twenty or so chickens (all hens). Not to mention the little garden where just about everything you could imagine was grown. There were also a couple cottages on the property that people can rent as vacation houses.

Ashley had a great time petting her first horse, "petting" chickens, feeding goats, and eating strawberries (her favorite food of all time) right off the vine. It was a great family day for the three of us as well.

Journey at Raley Field

If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that I would have the opportunity to shoot one of my favorite bands of all time; I would have called into question your sanity. None the less I found myself doing just that on Saturday night.

First a word of frustration: Where and how did the three song rule come into play? For those that don't know; the industry standard for concerts is that photographers/videographers can shoot from the pit (the area directly in front of the stage) for only the first three songs. The frustrating thing is that most bands save their best songs/performances (signature items) for the latter third of the show. I can also understand why as a performer you wouldn't want a camera, or in Jourey's case: half dozen cameras, shoved in your face for two plus hours. I just wish there was a little more flexibility for the photographer as well.

On to the show! What can I say: Journey still has it after all these years. Their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda, had so much energy it was nearly impossible to keep up with him on stage. Every time I thought I would get a good shot of him he would be gone in a blur! I was also really impressed how good he sounded. It is uncanny how close he sounds to Steve Perry. The rest of the band delivered as well. For two hours it was magic. My most favorite moment was when I moved to the roof of Raley Field to get some shots of the band performing over a backdrop of Sacramento. That's when I found myself singing and dancing along all by myself to their hit: "Be Good to Yourself." All by myself; nobody watching. I was totally lost in that moment.

A new one of Heather and Ashley

All my wife really wanted for Mothers Day was to spend the day together as a family. So off to the zoo we went! The zoo was much smaller than the Sacramento Zoo. But in this case; smaller was good! We were able to actually pet deer! We were also able to see bears; something which the Sacramento zoo does not offer.

It was a great time: Ashley was able to run around, point, and yell at all the different animals, while Heather and I had a blast hanging out as a family. I wish that we could do it more often. Here are a couple photos from the day.

Endfest 2009

I have decided to enter the world of blogging. So here goes:

I shot my first concert this weekend. It was a blast. I was truly amazed at how fast everything happens on stage. As a photographer you try to compose each shot. Taking into careful account where your subject is in relation to your background; in order to make the photo interesting and draw the viewer's eye in. All good and well; but when you have 3 songs (maybe 9 minutes) to get the shots you want; all of the sudden that goes out the window. Every time I tried to compose a shot the subject would move away! I tried my best though; and was able to compose a few decent shot amongst a sea of clipped guitar heads, hands, heads, etc.

All in all I did get some good images.
